The Problem of Work or Vocation

Do you sometimes think, Gee, if only I didn't have to work . . . and imagine

sleeping late every morning, or taking trips to the South Sea Islands, or watching double-headers every afternoon in summer, and absorbing batting averages every afternoon in winter?

When you do this, you are really changing "vocation" into "vacation." You are thinking of work as an intrusion, a really unwelcome intrusion, upon the pleasant things of life. It's the same way no matter what the "work" is: turning a bolt on an assembly line, sitting behind a desk, selling brushes from door to door, or grinding out algebra assignments for a high school teacher who seems to have been created simply to make life miserable for you.

Our attitude toward work, toward jobs or vocations, has gotten out of kilter. To many people a job has become a nuisance rather than an opportunity. And since work is part and parcel of life, we need to develop a positive attitude toward it. Can the Bible throw any light on this perplexing problem?
