It all boils down to this: in the first century a handful of people made the astounding claim that the Messiah for whom the Jews had been looking for hundreds of years had arrived upon the scene.
The rest of the people thought it was nonsense.
Ask an intelligent man why he thought it was nonsense, and you'd get an answer like this:
INTELLIGENT MAN (patiently): Look. The real Messiah is going to be a great leader. And the Messiah the "Christians" are offering is nothing of the sort. I know about his being put to death with a couple of crooks. You can't keep that sort of thing quiet. But believe me, a real Messiah won't get crucifiedhe'll be a leader. What's that? Oh, I know as well as you do that they're noising around this incredible notion that their Jesus isn't dead. What do they mean, isn't dead? I saw the soldiers seal the tomb with the body inside. That's good enough for me.
