Christian Science
A religious movement whose basic principles are healing by spiritual means rather than by surgery or medicine, optimism in the face of disaster, and a belief in God as a universal, impersonal, infinite Mind. Christian Science was founded by Mary Baker Eddy in Massachusetts in 1866 and spread to the rest of the U.S., to the British Empire, and to Germany. The name of the movement is believed to have been used for the first time by P. P. Quimby, a physician and mesmerist in Portland, Maine, of whom Mrs. Eddy was once a patient. The official name of the organization is Church of Christ, Scientist.
